Melco Crown Philippines, costs of hiring soar

Melco Crown (Philippines) Resorts Corporation, which will open City of Dreams Manila (pictured in rendering), which management calls "sneak peak" in December, hired about 2,200 employees in the third quarter of 2014. That's up 89% from the previous quarter ending June 30. The company employs 4,679 people as of Sept. 30, it said in a filing to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The large hiring ahead of next month's soft opening impacted the company's operating losses during the period. Losses in the three months to Sept. 30 were 1.8 billion PHP (US$40 million), up 162% year-over-year.

The increase is mainly related to pre-opening costs "due to the continued development of the dream city of Manila," the company said.

The initiative is a partnership between Melco Crown and Premium Leisure Corp, owned by the family of Philippine billionaire Henry Shi.

Melco Crown Philippines said the increase in pre-opening costs was mainly due to a 1.3 billion PHP increase in staff costs, which was "consistent with the increase in staffing."

The company is expected to increase its workforce by another 16% at the end of the year to complete the total workforce supplement.

The company plans to open the property gently in December, which parent company Melco Crown Entertainment co-chairman and chief executive Lawrence Hou Yau Loong called a "sneak peak."

Ho said on a conference call last week that the grand opening is scheduled before Spring Festival 2015. 카지노사이트

"For small peaks, we want to run more stress test simulations, but at the same time, pretty much everything will open up," he told analysts.

"The Philippine market continues to grow strongly, and we believe the introduction of City of Dream Manila will greatly enhance Manila's appeal to local and international customers," Ho said.
